Work Sampling vs. Time Studies
Both work sampling and traditional time studies are valuable work measurement techniques, but they serve different purposes and have distinct advantages.
Traditional (Stopwatch) Time Studies – Involve continuous or element-by-element timing of tasks. - Provide detailed standard times for individual work elements. - Best suited for repetitive, well-defined tasks where high precision is needed. - Require more observer time and can be more intrusive.
Work Sampling (Statistical Snapshot Method) – Involves making random observations at predetermined intervals and recording what activity is occurring. - Estimates the percentage of time spent on different activities through statistical analysis. - Less intrusive and resource-intensive. - Particularly useful for long-cycle, varied, or non-repetitive work, and for studying multiple workers simultaneously. - Less precise for developing detailed element-level standard times.
